Stories and highlights
There's always something to celebrate at our school! From exciting events to proud moments and everyday wins, here are some of our highlights.
A year at our school
A year at our school is filled with energy, growth, and unforgettable moments. Students explore new worlds at our Book Fairs, learn about wellbeing with Healthy Harold, and broaden their horizons through exciting excursions. We are inspired by the incredible visits from Nedd Brockmann and celebrate culture and community during NAIDOC Day and Harmony Week. Our whole school unites for important causes such as Diabetes Day, and we cheer each other on during our swimming galas and programs. Creativity shines through at the Easter Hat Parade and our wonderfully messy Christmas festivities, while the School Spectacular showcases the outstanding talents of our students. We honour tradition with our ANZAC parades and proudly farewelled our leaders at the Year 6 Graduation. It is a year full of learning, joy, and connection.
Sport is alive and thriving at MPS. Students are competing with enthusiasm in events such as the NSW Small Schools Netball Knockout, the Paul Kelly Cup, basketball tournaments, and our athletics and cross-country carnivals. Our swimming galas are filled with colour, teamwork, and encouragement as every student gives their best. Throughout the year, Sporting Schools enriches our program by providing expert coaching in a wide range of sports—from cricket, AFL, and tennis to lacrosse and golf. Every term brings new opportunities for students to build skills, grow their confidence, and celebrate the joy of being active together.
Each year, our Assembly Awards and Presentation Day continue to shine a light on every aspect of school life, recognising student achievement, effort, and growth. These celebrations help students gain confidence and discover their unique talents. We take part in a wide range of academic and creative opportunities, including the NSW Spelling Bees, ICAS assessments, and the REEC Art programs. Our students engage deeply with digital technologies through coding and robotics, and many eagerly participate in the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge. Each experience enriches their learning and inspires them to keep striving, exploring, and achieving.
Technology and innovation. At MPS, students explore robotics, coding, and creative problem-solving in exciting and hands-on ways. Using Blue Bots, Dash, and LEGO Spike Essential Kits, they learn the basics of movement and control while designing incredible creations linked to farming, machinery, and transport. From windmills and silos to carnival rides and working cranes, their imagination takes centre stage. Students also develop coding skills through MakeCode.org, create their own arcade-style games and learn key programming concepts.
Our child feels truly safe and cared for every day. We’ve watched their confidence grow, and it’s clear they’re surrounded by people who believe in them. This school community feels less like an institution and more like a family—one we’re grateful to be a part of— a parent of Matong Public School
